The Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, returned to Rabat for a third official visit on 6-7 October 2026. He met with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, and the Royal Armed Forces. He exchanged views on the state of play of NATO-Morocco relations and regional security, and on prospects to deepen cooperation between NATO and the Kingdom of Morocco, building on the strong foundations established over the past three decades.

The discussions also focused on developments in North Africa and the Sahel region, as well as on shared security challenges, including terrorism, maritime security and other emerging threats.

Special Representative Colomina highlighted that “Morocco is a key partner in the region; and our cooperation can only get stronger.”

The Kingdom of Morocco has been part of the Mediterranean Dialogue since 1994, and was the first partner in the framework to conclude an Individually Tailored Partnership Programme (ITPP).

Special Representative Colomina also participated in the Small Arms and Light Weapons conference, co-hosted by NATO and the Kingdom of Morocco. This was the first regional conference on this topic, organised with partner countries, as part of the implementation of NATO’s Southern Neighbourhood Action Plan endorsed at the Washington Summit in 2024.
