Major General László Garas was born on 16th February 1967 in Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary. In 1985, he joined the Kossuth Lajos Officers' College and studied field artillery procedures. In 1988, upon graduation he was commissioned to officer with the first assignment of a D20 battery commander in the 101st Szigetvári Zrínyi Miklós Field Artillery Brigade in Pécs, Hungary.
As a junior officer with the rank of first lieutenant, captain and major, he fulfilled several field and antitank artillery positions and served a variety of artillery weapon systems, initially serving with the 101st Szigetvári Zrínyi Miklós Field Artillery Brigade in Pécs, later with 62nd Bercsényi Miklós Mechanised Infantry Brigade in Hódmezővásárhely. In this period of serving time, he completed German and English language courses and the US FA Officers' Advanced Course in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in the United States.
Between 1998 and 2000, he completed his studies at the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University in Budapest and became a Military Leader with University Diploma. In the university, the focus of his studies was Operations and Tactics of Land Forces with Field Artillery Procedures speciality.
Between 2001 and 2004, he served with HQ ARRC in Rheindahlen, Germany, in an SO2 FCOORD OPSCOOR position in the Fire Support Coordination Branch.
After completion his NATO tour in 2004, he returned back to Hungary and until 2016, he served with the Land Forces Command, then the Joint Forces Command in different staff positions, including leader of Exercise Planning Section in the Training Branch, MA to the Land Deputy Commander of the Joint Forces Command, Branch Chief of the Plans and Policy Branch, then the Branch Chief of the Land Operations and Training Branch in the Joint Forces Command. In 2008, he also assumed the Director of Staff position in KFOR HQ in Pristina, Kosovo for six months. In 2013, he completed the Senior Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy.
In 2016, he was nominated to the 1st Commander of the NATO Force Integration Unit in Hungary and served there until the NFIU reached FOC in June 2018. After establishing NFIU HUN, he returned back to be the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the Joint Forces Command, as his first general officer's position.
Upon establishment of the Hungarian Defence Forces Command on 01st of January 2019, he became the Director of the Operations Directorate of the HDF then later, in 2020, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the HDF. In 2019, he completed the General Flag Officers and Ambassadors Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy. He fulfilled the HQ MND-C Chief of Staff position from February 2023 for six months, then he became the Deputy Commander of HQ MND-C on 1st August 2023.
Major General GARAS assumed his current position as the Hungarian MILREP to NATO and the EU Military Committees on 15th August 2026.
He is married and has two adult children.
