Personal Data Protection at NATO

NATO is committed to the protection of personal data processed by the Organisation. Processing operations (including collecting, recording, storing, etc.) carried out by NATO are covered by the NATO Personal Data Protection Framework Policy, launched in 2024.

The Framework Policy sets out the personal data protection principles, rules on the sharing, transferring and disclosing of personal data, the governance framework and roles and rights of data subjects.

NATO processes various types of personal data. All personal data held by NATO will, for the entire duration of its processing, be handled fairly, legally, confidentially and securely, in accordance with the Framework Policy. Personal data is always attached to a specific purpose and has a legitimate basis for processing.

Personal data is retained and disposed of in accordance with the Policy on the Retention and Disposition of NATO Information.

NATO’s data subjects are entitled to certain rights regarding their personal data:

  • Right to Information: the right to obtain confirmation as to whether NATO is processing your personal data, as well as information on the processing purposes, legitimate bases, retention periods, and data sharing terms practiced by NATO.
  • Right to Access: the right access personal data being processed by NATO.
  • Right to Portability: the right to request a copy of the data subject’s personal data in a digital format, where data is handled by automated means (e.g., through digital forms) and the processing is based on consent, or a contract.
  • Right to Rectification: the right to rectify inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
  • Right to Erasure: the right to request the erasure of personal data.
  • Right to Object: the right to object to the processing of personal data, if the data subject believes NATO has no legitimate basis to process it.

Please note that these rights are not absolute – they are subject to conditions and restrictions, as established in the Framework Policy and by NATO’s privileges and immunities.

Each NATO Body has a process for handling requests to assert data subject rights, as well as a process for handling related dispute resolution. The latter process has three levels of appeal. For external data subjects, these can include, as applicable, consideration by: firstly, the local data manager, with the coordination of the Personal Data Protection Officer; secondly, the Head of NATO body; and lastly, an independent decision-making authority for final and binding decision.

You can report a data protection concern or pose questions to the NATO Personal Data Protection Officer through the form below.
