NATO was founded in the aftermath of the Second World War to preserve peace and security across Europe and North America. Originally consisting of 12 countries, its membership has increased through several rounds of accession to encompass 32 Allies today. The Alliance’s founding principle of collective defence is that an attack against one is considered an attack against all.
NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept outlines the Alliance’s three core tasks: deterrence and defence, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security.
Since the creation of the Alliance in 1949, the principle of consensus has been the sole basis for decision-making in NATO. It applies to every level of the Organization.
NATO is resourced through the direct (collective budgets and programmes) and indirect (national military expenditure) contributions of its members.
NATO membership is open to any interested European state that meets certain conditions. An invitation to join NATO is only granted via unanimous consent among existing Allies.
