The Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Mr Javier Colomina, returned to Nouakchott, Mauritania for an official visit on 8 October 2026. He met with Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ould Merzoug, the Minister of Defence, Mr Ould Sidi, the Deputy Chief of Defence, Major General Mohamed Cheikh Beidda, and other senior representatives of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. He also met with Allied Ambassadors.

The visit builds upon the important partnership developed between NATO and Mauritania over the years, as also marked by the visit of the President of Mauritania, Mr Ould Ghazouani, to NATO Headquarters in March. Special Representative Colomina and his counterparts shared views on a range of issues of mutual concern, including NATO-Mauritania relations as well as the worsening regional security challenges emanating from the Sahel. Special Representative Colomina highlighted that, as NATO’s only partner in the Sahel region, Mauritania’s role and its partnership with the Alliance are crucial for regional stability and security. He also welcomed the continued growth of practical cooperation between NATO and Mauritania through the comprehensive Defence Capability Building (DCB) package, adopted at the Madrid Summit in 2022, and the Individually Tailored Partnership Programme (ITPP) adopted in early 2026.

This deepening cooperation is part of the implementation of NATO’s Southern Neighbourhood Action Plan endorsed at the Washington Summit in 2024.
