Mr. Jan Knutsson is currently Permanent Representative of Sweden to NATO. He assumed office on 25 August 2024.
He was State Secretary for Foreign Affairs between 2022-2024.
Prior to that he has served as Ambassador of Sweden to Switzerland, to Saudia Arabia, as well as Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva.
Mr. Knutsson’s previous diplomatic assignments have taken him to Washington, D.C, where he served as the Political Counsellor at the Swedish Embassy 1997-2001, and also to Paris, Moscow and Beijing.
At the Foreign Ministry in Stockholm, Mr Knutsson has held the position as Envoy for Migration and Refugee Issues in 2015-2016, and prior to that Director General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Deputy Director General and Head of Department for Global Security, Deputy Head of Department for European Security, as well as a member of the Policy Planning staff and the Task Force for Reform of the Government Offices.
Mr. Knutsson is a graduate of the Stockholm School of Economics. He has pursued studies in the Liberal Arts at Uppsala University and been a research assistant at the Stockholm Institute for Soviet and East European Affairs. Mr. Knutsson was born in 1958, is married to Eva, and has four children.
