Lieutenant Colonel Karin Malmsten currently serves as the NATO International Military Staff Gender Advisor (IMS GENAD) where she leads efforts to integrate gender perspectives into military planning, operations and policy. With over three decades of service as Logistics Officer in the Swedish Army, she brings a wealth of operational, strategic and diplomatic experience to this role.
Her military career began in 1983 and has included a wide range of positions both in Sweden and abroad. Early in her service, she was deployed as a platoon leader in Croatia under the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) and an intelligence officer in Bosnia and Herzegovina under the Stabilisation Force in (SFOR).
After graduating from the Swedish Defence University in 2008, she served for a decade at the Logistics School and developed experience in training, logistics and operational planning. From 2018 onward, she held a series of strategic appointments at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters, including in Procurement and Solider Equipment, where she focused on addressing specific equipment needs for women.
Lt Col Malmsten deepened her experience in multilateral and diplomatic settings while representing Sweden at the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Korea. She later contributed to long-term planning and policy development at the Swedish Defence Staff’s Directorate of Strategic Plans and Policy, where she delivered support to Ukraine and played a key role in advancing the Action Plan for EU Military Mobility.
Her military education includes specialised training in logistics operations, gender advisory, systems engineering and international peacekeeping. She also holds a degree in Political Science, with additional academic work in gender studies, military history and project management from leading Swedish Universities.
Lt Col Malmsten has two children and enjoys horse riding and hiking in her free time.
