Lieutenant General DE DECKER completed his military education at the Belgian Royal Military Academy as an engineer with the 140th Polytechnic promotion in 1990. After his training as F-16 pilot he was appointed to the 31 Tiger Squadron in Kleine-Brogel Air Base (10th Tactical Wing) were he passed through all the levels of command while specializing in Electronic warfare, Targeting & Weaponeering and Nuclear operations.
With the squadron he participated in several operational tours in the Balkan and later over Afghanistan. In 2001 he was selected to go the United States Test Pilot School where he was formed as Experimental Test Pilot. He stayed another 2 years in the USAF F16 Test Squadron to help develop and test the F-16 Mid Life Update. Back in Belgium he served in the Material Command and was military advisor to the Belgian Ambassador to NATO.
After a year as project leader of the Air cooperation project between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg, he became director of Flight Safety until his appointment as Commander of 10th Tactical Wing in 2015. Rejoining back the headquarters in the fall of 2018, he worked on promoting Defence in preparation of the “New Federal Legislation” by organizing sessions in different Belgian cities with captains of industry. In the summer of 2019, he became the Chief of Staff of the Air Component and contributed to the restructuring of the air capabilities.
During his assignments, he continued to serve in all the expeditionary operations of the Belgian Air Force. In 2022, he was appointed as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Readiness & Operations overseeing the preparation and operations of all components. In a changing geopolitical environment, the foundation was also being laid for our society's resilience. As from March 20th, 2025, he is the 17th Air Force Commander.
