Admiral Guido Venturoni

Admiral Guido VENTURONI was born in Teramo on 10 April 1934. He entered the Naval Academy in 1952 and graduated as Ensign in July 1956.

During the period 1958-59 he attended the US Navy flight training school, achieving his Naval Aviator's wings and Carrier qualification.

In the rank of Lieutenant he served on board various naval units as Navigation and Communications officer. From 1960 to 1965 he flew maritime patrol aircraft, becoming an ASW tactical instructor. In 1966 he additionally qualified as a helicopter pilot. From 1969 to 1971 he served in the Staff of the Commander Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe, first in Malta and then in Naples.

He has been Commanding Officer of the corvettes 'Danaide', 'Albatross' and 'Urania', the 2nd Helo Squadron, the frigate 'Fasan' and the cruiser 'Caio Duilio'. He later commanded the 1st Naval Division and from Feb 1991 to Feb 1992 he was Commander in Chief of the Fleet and NATO Commander of the Central Mediterranean.

His more significant appointments within the Central Staff Offices have been: Executive Assistant to the Chief of Defence, Head of the Plans and Operations Department both at the Navy Staff and the Defence General Staff, Head of the Financial Planning Bureau of the Navy Staff, Deputy Chief of the Navy Staff, Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy and finally, from 1 Jan 1994 until 15 February 1999, Chief of the Italian Defence General Staff.

Admiral VENTURONI has been decorated with a number of National and International awards.

He is married to Giuliana MARINOZZI, has two sons and a daughter and nine grandchildren.

On 6 May 1999, he was appointed Chairman of the Military Committee for NATO.
