NATO’s core activities provide deterrence and defence to protect its member countries. The Alliance’s operations and missions also contribute to security at home by helping to maintain peace and stability on the international stage, where NATO leads a wide range of crisis management and cooperative security activities with partners.
NATO is currently engaged in a number of operations and missions, including in Kosovo, Iraq, Africa and in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.
NATO’s past operations and missions have included a variety of peace-support activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
NATO does not possess military forces of its own. Members voluntarily provide the personnel, equipment and resources required for any task.
