This week, the NATO-Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Regional Centre in Kuwait is hosting a course on Crisis Management and Disaster Response for over 30 civil and military participants from different countries across the Gulf region.

Organised in cooperation with the Bulgaria-based Crisis Management and Disaster Response Centre of Excellence, the four-day course aims to strengthen participants’ ability to prepare for and manage complex crises and disasters. It covered the strategic, operational and tactical dimensions of crisis response, with a focus on ensuring effective coordination across government institutions and the wider society.

Participants examined and practiced the different stages of crisis management, from preparedness and risk reduction to response and recovery, through lectures run by subject matter-experts, simulations, syndicate work and analysis of case studies.

Additional activities are foreseen, before the end of the year, including on maritime security, counter-terrorism, countering unmanned aircraft systems, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence. Flagship projects on these topics were launched during the NATO Summit in Ankara. They support ICI partners in countering security challenges, while also while also further leveraging existing capabilities to contribute to NATO’s security.

Through its activities, the NATO-ICI Centre continues to advance political dialogue and practical cooperation between NATO and the Gulf region.
