The NATO High Level Group, the senior advisory board to NATO’s Nuclear Planning Group (NPG), met in Brussels on Wednesday (25 February 2026) to discuss the role of NATO’s nuclear capabilities in preserving peace, preventing coercion, and deterring aggression.
Representatives focused on further strengthening the credibility, effectiveness, safety, and security of NATO’s nuclear deterrence, in light of the evolving security environment. Allies underscored the importance of NATO’s nuclear burden sharing and discussed approaches to safeguarding Alliance security through NATO’s nuclear posture. They also exercised the consultative process and reaffirmed that nuclear consultation remains a fundamental principle of NATO’s nuclear policy.
The meeting was chaired by the NATO High Level Group Chair, Dr Robert Soofer.
