Brussels, NATO HQ, 4 December 2025 – Director General of the International Military Staff (DGIMS), Lieutenant General Remigijus Baltrėnas met with visiting Ukraine officers from National Defence University Kyiv. During the fruitful discussion, DGIMS highlighted the importance of mutually-benefitting, practical military cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance, valuing education during times of war.

“The investment in education, even during the conflict, remains paramount. I would say key. You should always continue to learn and build your professional knowledge using every opportunity given by your nation, by yourself, and interactions like this visit” said Lieutenant General Baltrėnas.

In his opening remarks, DGIMS first praised and thanked Ukrainian officers for their meritorious service and sacrifice for their country, and for values to which we all stand. He also strongly highlighted Ukraine’s military for their adaptability to implementing new technologies and tactics in the battlefield, setting indeed an example and providing truly valuable lessons. In this regard, he underlined that “the knowledge and skills accumulated by Ukrainian Armed Forces could also help NATO to evolve faster. NATO is learning from Ukraine. The Joint Analysis Training and Education Centre, the first ever joint NATO-Ukraine organisation in Poland to share the lessons from military tactical level is a good example of this learning process.”

Lieutenant General Baltrėnas mentioned that innovation, adaptation, and experimentation in NATO Alliance is ensured by Allied Command Transformation situated in Norfolk. He also mentioned that the speed of evolution of the opponent’s technology and tactics requires faster progress in NATO.

During their visit at NATO HQ, the Ukraine military personnel held a number of meetings with various civilian and military stakeholders, including the International Staff Political Affairs and Security Policy Division and the IMS Cooperative Security Division, where they heard about NATO support to Ukraine.
