NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, travelled to Algiers on 28-29 January 2025 to discuss ways to strengthen NATO’s cooperation with Algeria.

In his first visit there as Special Representative, Mr. Colomina engaged with senior officials from Algeria’s Foreign and Defence Ministries, including Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs. He also met Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army General Saïd Chanegriha. In addition to exchanging views on security issues across the region, the discussions focused on enhancing collaboration, including on counter-terrorism.

Mr. Colomina welcomed the growing political dialogue between NATO and Algeria. He emphasised the importance of developing practical cooperation aligned with Algeria’s priorities, which include tackling a range of shared security challenges in North Africa and the Sahel.

The Mediterranean Dialogue is a NATO partnership forum that aims to contribute to regional security and stability in the Mediterranean through political dialogue and practical cooperation. Algeria joined the Mediterranean Dialogue in 2000.
