NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Javier Colomina conducted an official visit to Algeria on 17-19 January 2022. He met with several Algerian officials and delivered a speech at the National Institute of Strategic Global Studies, one of the country’s most renowned research centres for issues of international affairs.

During his visit, Mr Colomina attended meetings with high-level officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence to discuss NATO-Algeria cooperation and regional security challenges of common concern. Mr Colomina highlighted Algeria’s key role in North Africa and in the Sahel region, and its experience and expertise on regional security issues, including in the area of counter-terrorism.

In 2000, Algeria joined the Mediterranean Dialogue, a partnership forum that aims to contribute to regional security and stability in the Mediterranean through political dialogue and practical cooperation. Practical cooperation between NATO and Algeria is focused on areas such as military training and education activities, and NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme. Algeria’s contributions to regional security and its strategic position in North Africa and the Mediterranean make it an indispensable partner for the Alliance.

Both parties are committed to the further development of NATO-Algeria cooperation through more regular political dialogue and enhanced practical cooperation.
