NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain to NATO Headquarters on Wednesday (21 November 2018). The Secretary General and His Majesty laid a wreath at the Monument in Memory of the Fallen, and then participated in a meeting of the North Atlantic Council. Opening the meeting, the Secretary General said: “in 1982, NATO, an Alliance based on democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law, welcomed Spain as a member.” Mr. Stoltenberg praised Spain for its many contributions to the Alliance, on land, at sea, and in the air. He particularly thanked Spain for its contributions to training local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, which helps to suppress international terrorism.
