General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visited Ljubljana, Slovenia on the 23rd October 2014. The Chairman met with the President of Slovenia, Mr. Borut Pahor, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Janko Veber, the Chief of General Staff, Brigadier General Andrej Osterman and members of the Slovenian Parliament’s Defence Committee. Among the main subjects discussed were NATO’s current security challenges, the implementation of the Readiness Action Plan, defence spending and Slovenia’s contribution to NATO’s defence initiatives, in addition to the outcomes of the recent meeting of the Military Committee Chiefs of Defence in Vilnius.

In discussions with President Pahor, General Bartels touched upon the growing instability to the East and the South of the Alliance, as regional Balkan security issues. General Bartels also stated that NATO realized the economic hardship many Allies had suffered, including Slovenia, but that "we need to remind ourselves that security has a cost and the price of insecurity is much much higher”.

In his meeting with Mr. Janko Veber, the Slovenian Minister of Defence, General Bartels discussed the continued benefits of Smart Defence and Slovenia’s involvement in the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC), the Strategic Sealift Consortium, the Allied Ground Surveillance programme as well as the offer from Slovenia to host the Multinational Mountain Warfare (MW) Centre of Excellence. "These are excellent examples of how Connected Forces and Smart Defence initiatives are being put to use and demonstrate how Allies can, both, contribute and benefit from close cooperation in NATO", the Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee said.

As a dedicated and reliable NATO member, Slovenia also contributes to NATO missions and operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo. At the press conference with Major General Božič, General Bartels took the opportunity to “express NATO’s gratitude for the service and sacrifice of your servicemen and women in our missions in order to preserve peace and security both nearby and beyond”.

Speaking with the Slovenian Parliament’s Defence Committee, the Chairman shared his views on NATO’s future and how a country like Slovenia can continue to play an active role by taking advantage of regional cooperation and joint NATO exercises as part of NATO's Assurance Measures. "NATO's strength is the solidarity of all 28 Allied Nations. Therefore I welcome Slovenian participation in exercises on a rotational basis"

General Bartels mentioned during his discussions with the Chief of the General Staff Brigadier General Osterman that there is a persistent demand for NATO's forces to stay prepared in order to deal with the diverse transnational and multifaceted threats. "Therefore I welcome the Slovenian Armed Forces’ plan to modernize its two brigades and Special Forces unit. Key words for NATO in this respect are connectivity and deployability", General Bartels said.
