NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen welcomed the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser at the NATO Headquarters on 8 March 2012, in a first visit of a President of the UN General Assembly to NATO.

They welcomed the growing cooperation between NATO and the United Nations, including in the Alliance’s UN-mandated peace support operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan.

“I am very pleased with the development of NATO-UN cooperation since the signing of the Joint Declaration by NATO and UN Secretaries General in 2008. NATO's new Strategic Concept states NATO's commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and our operations are conducted under UN Security Council mandate", the Secretary General said during the meeting.  “In the Libya crisis, we have demonstrated how NATO and the UN can work together as partners. And we are demonstrating it every day in Afghanistan”.

The NATO Secretary General underscored the important role of the UN General Assembly and expressed NATO's interest to continue to participate in the UNGA events, including through the NATO Liaison Officer in New York.
