In a speech in Chicago, the NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the Alliance and Russia has a great opportunity to advance their relationship through missile defense.

“What we have in mind is cooperation between to independent missile defense systems,” Mr. Fogh Rasmussen said. “If we achieve this, if will be a tangible demonstration that NATO and Russia can build security together, rather than against each other.”

The Secretary General made clear that NATO and Russia still have disagreement of principle on issues such as Georgia, where the Alliance insists on full respect for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We must not shy away from discussing these disagreements, but neither must we allow them to paralyse our partnership,” he said.

Mr. Fogh Rasmussen was speaking at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago, where he also took numerous questions from student and members of the public.

During his visit in Chicago he also met the Mayor-Elect Rahm Emanuel.

On Thursday the Secretary General will give a speech at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington.
