The President of Romania, Traian Basescu, met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on 28 October to discuss the Strategic Concept that will be adopted at the Lisbon Summit in November.

They talked about the need for the Alliance to build a missile defence capability to defend allied territory and populations against missile attacks and about deepening relations with Russia. In their discussions, they looked forward to the NATO-Russia Council Summit that will be held at the level of Heads of State and Government in Lisbon.

The Secretary General also thanked President Basescu for Romania’s firm commitment to the Alliance’s operations, and in particular for the country’s contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
