The NATO Secretary General attended the Conference Women, Peace and Security in Brussels to mark the 10th anniversary of the UN’s landmark resolution 1325 calling for full and equal participation of women at all levels in issues ranging from conflict prevention to post-conflict reconstruction.

"We must empower women and confront victimisation if we are to deal successfully with the security challenges of the 21st century. This is a task not only for NATO, but a challenge that the Alliance, the European Union, and civil society actors must address jointly.  I am encouraged by the common approach that we have seen today", the Secretary General said.

In his remarks, the Secretary General noted that NATO’s military authorities have developed guidelines for the integration of gender issues into all NATO operations based on Resolution 1325  and that in Afghanistan NATO is making efforts in order to involve more women in our peace-building efforts.
