Helping Moldova and Ukraine cope with flooding

On 31 July 2008, the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Co-ordination Centre (EADRCC) received an urgent request from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to help them cope with major floods.
Both countries have been struck by heavy rains and storms in the region of the Dniestr and Prut rivers for several days, leading to one of the worst flooding in a century. Thousands of houses, roads and bridges have been damaged and over 30,000 people evacuated.
Though the water level slowly returns to normal, Ukrainian officials said the greatest danger now was the contamination of water supplies by bacteria carried in sewage. Both countries have declared a state of emergency and called for international assistance.
In line with its procedures, the EADRCC has forwarded the request to NATO and Partner countries and has begun publishing situation reports on the development of the situation, the assistance provided and the outstanding needs.
