NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met for the first time in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on 1 February.

He also met with Prime Minister Francois Fillon and Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner.

They discussed the full range of issues on the Euro-Atlantic agenda, including NATO enlargement, relations with Russia, and the importance of developing a strong European defence in close partnership with a developing NATO.

They also addressed the situation in Kosovo, agreeing that the status quo is not sustainable, and that KFOR will continue to play its role, led now by French General de Marnhac, to ensure security in Kosovo.
