A workshop for Estonian and Lithuanian information specialists was organised at NATO HQ, 24-26 September. The workshop explored different aspects of public information, including information strategy and crisis communication. It specifically focused on current public opinion and perceptions of NATO in these two aspirant countries, as well as ways of fine-tuning their existing information strategies.

Representatives from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland gave presentations on their experience of public information since their membership of the Alliance in 1999. The workshop finished with two simulation exercises: Estonia focused on the drawing up of a crisis communication plan and Lithuania worked on the setting up of a public information campaign in preparation of a referendum on NATO membership.

This was the third information workshop to be organised by NATO under the commitment made at the Washington Summit in 1999 to provide concrete advice to aspiring countries participating in the Membership Action Plan. The previous workshops took place in March 2001 and July 2000.
