General Dieter Stöckmann, the newly appointed Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), assumed his duties after a change of command ceremony held at the Supreme Allied Command Europe (SHAPE), Mons, on 17 September.
He succeeds General Sir Rupert Smith of the United Kingdom and will be himself succeeded as SHAPE Chief of Staff by Vice Admiral Sir Ian Garnett, KCB, UK Navy. Vice Admiral Garnett will be promoted to the rank of Admiral.
