A high-level symposium entitled "Building a vision: NATO's future transformation" is being held, 5-7 September, in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The symposium will raise some of the issues the Alliance faces in today's rapidly changing international environment and will also be an opportunity to discuss the ideas and visions currently being put forward to address these issues.

In a pre-symposium workshop on 5 September, participants discussed the issue of multinational experimentation in areas such as ballistic missile defence, interoperability, command and control and information sharing. On 6-7 September, they will focus on the technological, industrial and scientific aspects of adapting to today's transformed environment.

Participants include NATO Ambassadors, Chiefs of Defence from NATO member countries, Ambassadors to Norway from NATO and Partner countries, representatives from the European Union, from international and scientific organisations and from research institutes, national armament directors, business and industry leaders and members of academia. NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, will participate in discussions on 7 September.

The symposium is hosted by the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic, the Defence Command, Norway, and the United States Joint Forces Command.
