"Highway or barrier?: The Republic of Moldova's integration into Euro-Atlantic structures" was the theme of an international conference held in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, from 26-27 April.

Participants from Moldova, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States assessed the political, military, legal and social implications of Moldovan participation in today's European security architecture. Participants set the debate in the global context of peace-building in Europe and discussed the potential effects of Moldovan integration in areas such as regional and trans-border cooperation, conflict resolution, the country's policy of neutrality and the role of small countries in the general context of European security.

Moldova is currently a member of NATO's Partnership for Peace programme and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. It is also a member of the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The Institute of Political Studies and International Relations hosted the conference, which was organised by the Viitorul Foundation, Chisinau, and the Conflict Studies Research Centre at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst, Camberley, and co-sponsored by NATO.
