The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Mr Mikulas Dzurinda, and Foreign Minister, Eduard Kukan, came to NATO HQ on 24 November to inform Lord Robertson of the latest developments in Slovakia's preparations for membership. Mr Dzurinda stated that his country had set itself three main goals: to become a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), of NATO and of the European Union.
Very recently, Slovakia has become the OECD's 30th member. Lord Robertson informed the Prime Minister that the enlargement process would next be considered at the NATO Summit in 2002. During that period, elections will be held in Slovakia, but Lord Robertson stated that domestic considerations would not influence the Alliance's decision; invitation for membership will depend on whether the country is ready to join, whether NATO is ready for enlargement, as well as on the general security environment that will prevail at the time.
