During a visit to Slovenia and Slovakia on 10 and 11 May respectively, Secretary General Lord Robertson stated that the next round of invitations for membership would take place at the Alliance's major summit planned in 2002.

Participants in the Membership Action Plan - MAP (Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1 ) will be putting themselves forward as candidates for membership. In this context, the Prime Minister of Romania, Mr Mugur Isarescu, came to NATO HQ on 15 May and a seminar involving MAP countries is scheduled for late June of this year.
