At the end of 1998, NATO civilian employees and their families personally thanked and presented an award to Virginia Congressman, Owen Pickett, for his efforts to amend the US Immigration and Nationality Act. The adult children of long-serving non-US NATO civilians and retirees at Allied Command Atlantic (ACLANT) have been granted special immigrant status. They can now remain in the US to seek employment after graduation from high school or college. The Alliance employs around 60 non-US civilians in Norfolk and Yorktown, southeastern Virginia, USA.
