The NATO Defence Planning Committee has today appointed
Lieutenant General John J. Sheehan, United States,
Marine Corps to succeed Admiral Paul D. Miller as
Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic.
In releasing Admiral Miller from his assignment as
Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic the Committee has
expressed to him in the name of the Governments
represented in the Committee, deep and lasting gratitude
for his distinguished service.
The Committee had requested that the President of the
United States of America nominate an officer of the
United States Armed Forces for appointment by the
Committee as Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic, to
succeed Admiral Miller. In response to this request,
President Clinton has informed the Committee of his
nomination of Lieutenant General John J. Sheehan for
consideration by the Committee as successor to Admiral
Miller. General Sheehan is now serving as Director for
Operations, J-3, Joint Staff, Washington D.C.
The Defence Planning Committee today has adopted a
resolution appointing General Sheehan Supreme Allied
Commander, Atlantic, as successor to Admiral Miller,
with the same powers and functions.
In addition to the NATO position, General Sheehan will
be assigned as Commander in Chief, United States
Atlantic Command.
General Sheehan will take up his appointment in October
1994.
