Integrated Air and Missile Defence Policy Committee

The Integrated Air and Missile Defence Policy Committee (IAMD PC) is the senior committee reporting to the North Atlantic Council on NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), including NATO Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD). It is also the lead committee for issues related to Joint Air Power and NATO Air Command and Control (Air C2).
Main responsibilities
The IAMD PC has two main focus areas: policy advice and support to capability development.
The committee is responsible for advising the North Atlantic Council – the Alliance’s principal political decision-making body – on any policy and capability adaptations required to ensure the enduring credibility and effectiveness of NATO’s IAMD mission against any air or missile threat to NATO’s populations, territory and forces. This includes monitoring and analysing relevant developments, be it challenges posed by state and non-state actors, or emerging and disruptive technologies, such as hypersonic vehicles. The IAMD PC also considers the broader spectrum of Joint Air Power and reflects in its work the relevance of space as an operational domain.
The committee is the senior forum for considering all aspects of IAMD, taking into account political, operational, economic, industrial and technological factors identified by Allies and other NATO bodies. Moreover, the committee is responsible for ensuring that IAMD aspects are properly reflected in the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP).
The IAMD PC is also responsible for interaction with partner countries and other states on selected IAMD issues.
Working mechanisms
The IAMD PC meets in several formats with relevant participants from Allied countries as needed, including national experts at senior and flag officer level and national representatives, both civilian and military, from Allied delegations at NATO Headquarters.
The IAMD PC is chaired by the Deputy Secretary General. The committee is supported by NATO’s International Staff, particularly the IAMD Section of the Defence Investment Division.
As a senior policy committee, the IAMD PC reports directly to the North Atlantic Council. The IAMD PC also works closely with other senior committees to ensure coherence and to avoid duplication of efforts in the broader context of NATO’s work on deterrence and defence. To this end, the IAMD PC was formed by merging the former Air and Missile Defence Committee (AMDC) and the former Defence Policy and Planning Committee (Reinforced) for Missile Defence.
