NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska
Merci, Catherine. Merci pour l'organisation de cette réunion et pour tout ce que la France fait pour renforcer notre securité collective. Merci.
We have gathered here in Paris, while the Russian aggression is becoming even more brutal in Ukraine, and while we are seeing also very aggressive hybrid actions across theAlliance. And in light of all these activities, we have proven again and again that we will remain united, and we will continue to show our strong solidarity and strong support for Ukraine. We see this as an essential element of keeping Europe and European countries safe.
What we have discussed today is that Europe is stepping up on various and several fronts: with funding, with equipment and supplies. With Russia's war against Ukraine in its fifth year, providing ongoing support to Ukraine remains really essential.
Let me be very clear: we focus on air defence and other vital equipment continuing to flow towards Ukraine through a number of channels, including the NATO's instrument calledPURL, which supplies the vast majority of crucial air defences that Ukraine needs to safeguard its cities and also protect infrastructure.
But we see that winter is coming, and the pressure on Ukraine has increased. So, this is why we have called on all Allies, and we share this goal among the E5, that Allies need to dig deep and do more, especially on air and missile defence. And we need to do it now, because every night the pressure from Russia is felt in almost every Ukrainian city.
So, thank you very much, Catherine, also for mentioning that in order for us to be able to do this, we also need to focus on our industrial output. The more we can produce, the more we can support Ukraine. But we will also continue to deepen our cooperation with Ukraine's defence industry, because this is a very direct way in which we can substantially increase the drone and counter-drone production, valuable for Ukraine but also for our security. And this support, we see it as vital to ensure just and lasting peace, but also long-term European security.
Of course, as many of you have said, the security of Europe extends beyond our borders. So today, we have addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, in the Red Sea, and we have all agreed that the freedom of navigation is vital, because the open sea lanes are important for our energy supply, for our energy security, also for global and our own trade. So, Allies have expressed a shared interest in keeping these waterways open and in safeguarding the infrastructure that depends on them. We have mentioned that many European Allies have already pre-positioned credible and valuable assets in this region, and it was very important that also in this E5 format we have welcomed the support to this effort. So, together, we will continue to explore the best ways in which we can keep these waterways open.
Thank you very much, Catherine, for your hospitality and organising an open and very, very important discussion.
