Dear Friends,

Welcome to this meeting of NATO foreign ministers and a special welcome to those who are joining us for the first time.

We are able to meet in person. I really appreciate that I can see you all in the same room. But as you know, we are only able to do that because we all adhere to  very strict measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Over the coming two days we have many important issues to discuss.

Preparations for the upcoming NATO summit, NATO 2030, Russia.
And, in our first session today, we will address NATO’s approach to the Middle East and North Africa.
And we will also discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

We strongly support efforts to reinvigorate the peace process.
As part of this process, we have adjusted our troop levels.
And Allies are consulting closely on the way forward.
