Prime Minister I thank-you for your warm welcome.

Poland is a staunch and committed Ally. I saw this myself earlier today as I observed your troops alongside Allies and partners during the Steadfast Jazz exercise.

Let me thank Poland for acting as one of the hosts for Steadfast Jazz and for your significant contribution to the exercise. We are grateful for your continued strong commitment to the Alliance.

As our combat mission in Afghanistan is completed, we need to ensure that we maintain the skills gained over eleven years of operating together. To be prepared, our forces must stay connected. That is what exercises like Steadfast Jazz are all about. It will train and test the NATO Response Force. Such exercises play a vital role in our future readiness.

You are also a strong contributor to our operations. Poland has contributed significant numbers of forces to our mission in Afghanistan for many years, including in tough places like the province of Ghazni. I count on Poland’s sustained commitment after our combat mission is completed in the end of 2014.

I also want to commend Poland for the great strides it has made in increasing its defence investment. You are one of the few Allies whose expenditure approaches our two percent benchmark – and we thank you for that. You also lead the way on multinational cooperation, both in NATO and the European Union, including promoting regional defence and security cooperation.

So I look to Poland to play a leadership role in ensuring that this December’s European Council on Security and Defence makes substantial progress in addressing capability shortfalls in Europe, because a strong European defence will ensure a strong NATO.

Next year, we’ll hold a NATO summit in the UK. Addressing capabilities, our future commitment to Afghanistan, strengthening our transatlantic bond and our global partnerships will be part of that summit.

So Prime Minister I look forward to working with you in the months ahead to ensure our Summit is a success.
