It is a great pleasure to welcome Prime Minister Filat to NATO. Our partnership with Moldova is important. And we want to bring our political dialogue and our practical cooperation to a new level.
Today the Prime Minister will meet the North Atlantic Council. We will have the opportunity to discuss many issues of common interest, including how NATO can further help Moldova take forward reforms. And we will discuss our preparations for the Chicago Summit in May. At Chicago we want to give a fresh impetus to our partnerships. Because it is clear that partnerships will remain at the core of NATO’s business.
Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the Prime Minister for the election of a new president in Moldova this month. I hope that this will draw a line under the political crisis. So that the different political parties can start working together for more dialogue and to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Moldova for a better future.
Now is the time to take forward reforms which will benefit all the people of Moldova -- such as fighting corruption, improving the rule of law and strengthening the democratic control of the armed forces.
Moldova has developed a solid Individual Partnership Action Plan with NATO. And we are committed to supporting Moldova in all reform areas you choose. I expect our discussions today to confirm our commitment to develop and deepen our partnership, which only reinforces Moldova’s path towards European integration.
