I've just met with President Obama here in the White House. I've taken the opportunity to thank the President for his strong leadership and for America's strong commitment to the NATO Alliance.

First of all, I congratulated the President on the successful operation against Osama bin Laden. It is increasingly obvious that bin Laden's evil ideology is bankrupt. The world is now a safer place.

But we  have more work to do. So we discussed our mission in Afghanistan. We are beginning to hand over security responsibility to the Afghan forces. We have a clear roadmap. We have a clear timetable. And the Afghan security forces are increasingly capable of ensuring their own security. That's why I am confident we can complete transition by the end of 2014.

Our mission in Afghanistan is a team effort. The US is not in this alone. Over 40,000 troops from other Allies and partners stand shoulder to shoulder with the Americans in Afghanistan.

Our operation in Libya is also a team effort. The United States provides unique and essential assets for our operation, for which we're very grateful. But the majority of the assets are provided by Canadian and European Allies and  partners in the region, and that is significant. A true team effort.

Our mission in Libya is to protect civilians against the outrageous attacks of the Qadhafi regime. We are fulfilling our mission. Day by day, we have been degrading Qadhafi's war machine. And now we can see the results.

We have saved numerous lives. We have stopped the Qadhafi regime's attempt to retake the country by force. And the Qadhafi's regime is more isolated every day. His time is up. It is time for the Libyan people to shape a new future, a future free from fear.

Finally, I also informed the President about my travel across America. I have talked and listened to many Americans from all walks of life. My message is very clear. NATO is vital to meeting the challenges to our security. We are very grateful for the significant contribution to our Alliance. And America and Europe are in this together.

So I thanked the President for his kind offer to host the next NATO summit here in the United States next spring. This is a clear demonstration of the strong American commitment to our Alliance.
