On behalf of NATO, I welcome the next step in the formation of the new Afghan Government, the nomination by President Karzai of a partial list of candidates for cabinet positions. NATO looks forward to the Parliament's review of nominees, in accordance with its constitutional role in confirming the cabinet.

I share President Karzai's view that the Afghan people deserve an effective government characterized by integrity and professionalism and welcome his stated commitment to fighting corruption.

NATO and ISAF have renewed and strengthened our commitment and will continue to assist Afghanistan and its new government, in particular to improve the security of the Afghan people and to help Afghanistan assume greater responsibility for its security.
