Good afternoon and let me warmly welcome all the countries contributing to KFOR.

Our meeting today is timely, as it takes place against the backdrop of events in Kosovo and in the region.

NATO, of course,  is not playing a lead role in guiding the status process.

But KFOR’s presence, and its effectiveness, are an essential pillar of stability in Kosovo– today, as much as ever.

KFOR’s mandate has always been to maintain a safe and secure environment in Kosovo, to protect majority and minority alike.  This mandate, under UNSCR 1244, has not changed. Nor will KFOR’s strength, and ability to reinforce if necessary.

No one should have any doubt: KFOR will act with speed and determination against anyone who threatens the stability.  And in doing so KFOR will be neutral and impartial.

This is a sensitive period in Kosovo and the region.  Emotions can run high.  Moderation must be the watchword.  All parties must exercise the maximum restraint, and the leaders of all communities bear a special responsibility to urge and to ensure calm.

We will do our part.  KFOR will stay, as long as its presence is required to ensure stability in Kosovo and safety for its people.
