NATO takes note of Montenegro’s declaration of independence, which follows a referendum which was certified free and fair both by Montenegrin officials and international observers. The Alliance respects the result of that referendum, as it represents the democratic will of the Montenegrin people.

I call on Belgrade and Podgorica to engage in direct talks on the issues which must now be addressed. NATO remains committed to good relations with both governments, and to the Euro-Atlantic future of the entire Balkan region.
