On behalf of the Alliance, I express my deep sorrow at the death of a Portuguese soldier serving in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, and my concern for the condition of the three soldiers who were also injured in the explosion which struck their vehicle.
The people and Government of Portugal should know that ISAF soldiers are carrying out an important mission – to help bring peace and stability to Afghanistan, and in so doing, to help ensure our shared security. This incident illustrated how much progress remains to be made. NATO will continue undeterred to carry out this important mission.
