In a statement on 25 October, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said he welcomed the constitution as “an important step in the political process in Iraq.”
I welcome the adoption of the Iraqi constitution. This is an important step in the political process in Iraq, to which there is no alternative. By casting their ballots, the Iraqi people have demonstrated their belief in the democratic process.
NATO will continue to support the Iraqi Government by training and equipping the Iraqi security forces, to help them to provide for the security of their country.
