On behalf of the Atlantic Alliance, I warmly welcome the success of the Presidential elections in Afghanistan.

This was, first and foremost, a victory for the Afghan people. After suffering for so many years under oppressive and brutal government, they came out in record numbers to make their voices heard. They have expressed their will to build a better future for themselves and for their children. The international community, including NATO, will stand with them in this common effort.

I also congratulate President Karzai on his victory in the elections. President Karzai has already set out his vision of a democratic Afghanistan, at peace with itself and its neighbours, and prospering in ever-closer cooperation with the international community. He has also demonstrated his resolve to make that vision a reality. I look forward to working with him, as NATO continues to play its important part in helping Afghanistan build a better, safer future.

Finally, let me also thank the servicemen and women of NATO's International Security Assistance Force. They played a key role, not only in helping to ensure security, but also by directly supporting the electoral process. Their efforts helped to make this election an historic success. ISAF will continue its important mission, as we look forward to next year's Parliamentary and municipal elections, and beyond.
