I condemn in the strongest possible terms the hostage-taking currently taking place in Southern Russia.

This outrageous act, which targets the most innocent - schoolchildren - is unacceptable. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the Russian people and, in particular, to the families of those who have already lost their lives. I call on all concerned to bring this hostage-taking to a peaceful end as soon as possible.

I also wish to express my deep sympathy to the families of those killed in yesterday's bombing in Moscow.

These attacks reinforce the requirement for the international community to stand together in the fight against terrorism. NATO and the NATO-Russia Council will continue to contribute to this vital international campaign.
