During the meeting of the North-Atlantic Council - NAC - it was said that NATO finds itself on a very important cross-road of its development.
Using this remark in the context of BiH, I would say that BiH has just left such a crossroad behind. The road that BiH has chosen is the road to the Partnership for Peace and to the Euro-Atlantic integration.
The statements of the Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson, during his last visit to Sarajevo, stand, among others, as the confirmation that the chosen road is the good one. The estimation that BiH made a big progress in this year is very important, and so is the future perspective of a warm and a merited welcome of BiH amid the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council - EAPC.
I would like to remind the esteemed members of the EAPC about the most important progresses that has been made:
The Defense Reform Commission has in a short period of time made a comprehensive report called "The Path to Partnership for Peace". The report offers the solutions which, in the framework of the Constitution of BiH, lead to the fulfillment of the conditions for the accession of BiH to PfP;
We are aware that we find ourselves at the beginning of a long road of reforms oFthe defense system.
We express our full commitment and support of the recommendation of the High Representative, Lord Ashdown about the implementation of the defense reforms, under the name of The Benchmarks for Bosnia and Herzegovina PfP Membership, including the necessity to fully cooperate with the ICTY. We understand the importance of this recommendation endorsed by the NAC.
The process of implementation of the reforms will at its beginning come across a financial difficulty. We believe that, with the understanding and the support of the members of EAPC, find the adequate solutions.
The reform of the defense system is a part, and a very important one, of the comprehensive process of reforms in BiH. BiH expects more democracy and security for all. We believe in regional cooperation and looking forward to our relations in the SEE for the wellbeing of all our peoples and citizens.
It is a great pleasure to be able to address the EAPC with the hope that after the NATO Summit in Istanbul, we will walk together through future crossroads and challenges. Thanks to all who support us and warm wishes for future success in work for Lord Robertson.
