Press Point by NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson upon landing at the airport in Moscow
We’re delighted to be here this evening in Moscow.
I come with the 19 NATO countries to assist at the NATO-Russia council for the first time in Moscow and the Russian Federation. This is a unique historical moment where we show that NATO needs Russia and Russia needs NATO and together, we can make the world a safer place.
But the first thing I want to do on behalf of NATO is to express my sympathy and my support to the Russian people for the dreadful act of criminal violence which took place today near Grozny in Chechnya. We all recognize that this is a terrible act and our heart, and our sympathy goes out to those who have been bereaved by this terrible incident.
Tomorrow, the NATO-Russia council will meet in Moscow. And this new baby is not even a full year old and yet, it has achieved much. We have taken it from a vision of many leaders into something that is now a concrete reality. The 20 has gone from being a number, into a new, and productive relationship.
So we are all looking forward to the meeting that will take place tomorrow and to the warm welcome from the Russian people for this new body.
