I commend the historic decision adopted today by the members of the Parliament of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia(1) . Proclamation of the Framework Agreement opens the way for a new deal in the country.
By voting in favour of the constitutional amendments which will move the country closer to European standards on the equitable treatment of minorities, the Parliamentarians have made the right decision. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is entering a new era which promises to bring stability and prosperity to the country and all its people.
NATO has always supported the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Alongside our partners in the international community, we will continue to support the democratically elected government in Skopje in its effort to unite the country and ensure that there is no return to violence.
The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is setting an example to the rest of the world. By turning its back on the spiral of violence that risked civil war, its leaders have created the opportunity to build a vibrant, peaceful, multi-ethnic democracy. The Parliamentarians have taken a very important decision. They must now build on this unique choice to help give the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and the entire region, a peaceful and stable future.
1. Turkey recognises the Republic of Macedonia with its constitutional name.
