From 31 March to 2 April 2026, representatives from NATO’s Defence and Security Cooperation Directorate met with the leadership and personnel of Azerbaijan’s National Defence University and its affiliated military education institutions in Baku. The visit aimed to assess ongoing reform efforts within the framework of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP).

The Azerbaijani Military Education Institution’s Commandants delivered a briefing on the progress achieved to date. As requested by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence, DEEP will continue supporting faculty and curriculum development and aligning English language training and testing with NATO standards.

After a visit by DEEP experts at the end of last year, the building of the capabilities to manage an eLearning platform will eventually extend to the entire Azerbaijani military education system.

In response to a request from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence, and after a visit planned for later this year, DEEP is due to support the NCO corps development, enhancing interoperability with NATO.

Major General Huseyn Mahmudov, Special Advisor to the Azerbaijani War College, praised DEEP’s assistance, in a process that has gained new momentum for the future of the region following the 8 August Peace Declaration.
