On 18 December 2025, NATO’s Deputy Secretary General, Radmila Shekerinska, visited Armenia, where she met Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Defence Minister Suren Papikyan, and Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan.
The Deputy Secretary General shared her views on topics such as NATO-Armenia relations, the normalisation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and NATO’s role supporting stability across the Black Sea region.
Ms. Shekerinska hailed the long-standing partnership between NATO and Armenia. She underscored the well-established political dialogue and practical cooperation, including on the modernisation of Armenia’s armed forces, the consolidation of good governance within the defence and security structures, and defence education. The Deputy Secretary General underlined that NATO’s partnership with Armenia is mutually beneficial and mutually agreed, and that Allies stand ready to further our political dialogue and cooperation with Armenia. She highlighted NATO-Armenia scientific cooperation and praised the professionalism of Armenian personnel serving in the NATO-led KFOR mission, in Kosovo, under a UN mandate.
The Deputy Secretary General reiterated that NATO welcomed the signature of the Joint Declaration in Washington D.C. in August, as well as the initialling of the Peace Treaty by the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan. She underlined the importance of implementing the peace agenda without delay, as a vital element for lasting peace in the region, which directly contributes to wider Euro-Atlantic security.
