The Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC), Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, visited NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), in Baghdad, 18 – 19 December 2025. During meetings with the Commander NMI, Major General Christophe Hintzy, the CMC received situational updates and key briefings on the work of NMI in strengthening NATO’s cooperation with Iraqi security institutions.
The CMC began his visit by meeting with Commander NMI, Major General Christophe Hintzy, for a situational update on regional security and all progresses made by NMI, in support of local institutions. Following this, the CMC met senior political leadership in the Iraqi government, including the National Security Advisor of Iraq, His Excellency Qassem Al-Araji, and the Counsellor of the Iraqi Prime Minister for NATO, Dr Khaled Al-Yaqoubi. The CMC subsequently met with the Chief of Defence of Iraq, Staff General Abdulameer Rashid Yarallah Yousif Al-Lamee.
In all meetings, CMC acknowledged and appreciated the very proactive, transparent and fruitful cooperation among all parties involved, as testified by the results achieved in capacity building. Admiral Cavo Dragone praised the Allied military personnel representing NATO at NMI, expressing his gratitude for their dedication and work with Iraqi security institutions.
NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) is a non-combat advisory and capacity-building mission that was established in 2018 following a request and upon invitation from the Iraqi government. It is currently led by Major General Christophe Hintzy, from France. It assists Iraq in building more sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security institutions and forces, enabling them to stabilise their country, fight terrorism, and prevent the return of ISIS/Daesh. NMI advises relevant Iraqi defence and security officials in the Ministry of Defence, the Office of the National Security Advisor, and the Federal Police Command within the Iraqi Ministry of Interior. The mission also advises Iraq’s professional military education institutions in the greater Baghdad area. All NMI activities are carried out on request by, and with the consent of, the Iraqi government, and are conducted in full respect of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Iraqi authorities have identified a number of primary objectives for cooperation with NMI. These include security education, logistics, cyber defence, border security, crisis and disaster management, and good governance. NMI works in close coordination with other stakeholders, such as the United Nations and the European Union Advisory Mission.
